Rectal Cancer
Rectal cancer is a malignancy of the lower part of the colon that requires precise surgical management. Dr. Dattani specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for rectal cancer, which allows for faster recovery and improved oncologic outcomes. For select patients, watch-and-wait (organ preservation) is now an option, avoiding surgery when complete response to treatment is achieved. This evolving approach offers patients the potential to retain normal bowel function without compromising cancer care.
Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis occurs when small pouches (diverticula) in the colon become inflamed or infected, leading to symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe complications requiring surgery. Dr. Dattani specializes in minimally invasive surgical treatment for diverticulitis, optimizing recovery and patient outcomes. He has published a Rapid Review on Diverticular Disease in American Family Physician (Read Here) and has presented on the topic at the Regional American College of Surgeons Chapter.
Colon & Rectal Cancer
Approximately 600 new cases of colon and rectal cancer are diagnosed each year in Idaho. Dr. Dattani is the highest-volume robotic surgeon in the state specializing in these procedures, focusing on minimally invasive surgery, excellent oncologic outcomes, and early return to daily life.
Anal Cancer
Anal cancer is commonly associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr. Dattani provides comprehensive evaluation and surgical treatment not only for anal cancer but also for HPV and high-risk lesions.
Rare Tumors
Dr. Dattani frequently treats rare tumors, including Neuroendocrine Tumors (Carcinoid), Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors, Desmoid Tumors, and Appendix Neoplasm (Cancer), among others.
Hernia Surgery
While Dr. Dattani specializes in colorectal surgery, his foundational training in General Surgery includes expertise in inguinal and ventral hernias. He offers minimally invasive approaches for both.
Anorectal Procedures
Dr. Dattani treats all conditions affecting the colon, rectum, and anus—no problem is too big or small. This includes diseases of the anus and anal canal, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, skin tags, anorectal abscesses, fistulas, anorectal lesions, and rectal prolapse.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Dr. Dattani is one of the few surgeons in Idaho specializing in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He offers minimally invasive and robotic approaches for surgical treatment and is highly experienced in ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (J-pouch surgery) for ulcerative colitis. His expertise extends to long-term postoperative follow-up to manage complications, optimize function, and ensure the best quality of life for his patients.
Natural Orifice Extraction
Dr. Dattani is the only surgeon in Idaho offering Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction (NOSE)—a cutting-edge, minimally invasive approach for colorectal surgery. In select patients, the diseased portion of the colon is removed through a natural orifice, such as the rectum or vagina, eliminating the need for a large abdominal incision. This technique is discussed preoperatively with eligible patients and can lead to reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes.
